Monday in the Park

Can you believe they were going to get rid of these wonderful old trees and build another office building?

In the late 1800's, before Canberra was established, this was the glebe or parish farm of St John's church. The land was allocated to the church by merchant and pastoralist Robert Campbell. Reverend Pierce Galliard Smith, the Rector for over half a century, planted elms, willows and poplars, and the more than five hundred elms in the park are remnants and descendants of his plantings.

Glebe House was demolished in the mid 1950's but a community campaign in the 1980's was successful in having the trees saved and a park established.

Across the road the vacant city block that used to host the circus when it came to town and then was the site of an office building is again being transformed, with a swish new apartment building going up.

The local real estate website has a three bedroom apartment on the top floor listed for one and a half million. I guess I'd better buy a lottery ticket.

After enjoying the sunshine in Glebe Park on this long weekend holiday Monday we strolled past the hotel to admire their gorgeous azaleas.

And then we wandered back up to the mall to finish the shopping we'd come for.
