Early Autumn by the Lake

On such a lovely sunny day it seemed a shame to go inside after visiting the plant fair, so we went for a walk by the lake. First we visited the Carillon, a gift from the British government to the people of Australia to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the city.

I love sun sparkling on water.

Again we marvelled at how green everything is after all the rain.

The Carillon is on an island reached by a footbridge.

There's still debris floating in the lake from the record-breaking rains at the beginning of the month.

The cormorants think it's been put there for them.

This little bird, having finished preening, treated us to a wonderful aerial acrobatic show.

The Carillon has 55 bells which apparently puts it in the large category.

Then, I must admit, due to the icy wind we cut our stroll short and drove over to Blundells Cottage. I love the afternoon sun on the stonework. I don't know if the blue trim has been identified as a colour that was once used on the building but I think it's a beautiful contrast.

The cottage was built around 1860 to house farm workers and their families from the Duntroon estate which occupied the land where central Canberra now stands. The Blundells were the longest residents, living in the cottage for almost 60 years, and afterwards the cottage was still occupied until 1958. It is now a museum.

The deciduous trees around the lake started changing colour weeks ago but have a way to go before they reach their full brilliance so I didn't take any photos. I hope there won't be such an icy wind next time we go for a walk. I was wearing a light fleece jumper (or sweater) and it wasn't enough. Hubby was wearing a short-sleeved short and shorts, he likes cooler weather and wouldn't shut up about it!
